Love Your Enemies
“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, Do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, Pray for those who mistreat you.” -Luke 6:27-28 (NIV)
Whew! This can be a tough directive if trying to accomplish it through our own will. How in the world are we supposed to “love” our enemies? “Do good” to those who hate us? Or, “bless” those who curse us? Why would God ask us to do something that’s pretty much impossible?
Notice the first part of the verse, it says: “But to those who are listening…” hmmmm… First question to ask yourself is, are you listening?
We must first be listening to hear someone; to even begin to understand what is being said to us - RIGHT?
Let’s break it down a little more - we live in two worlds, the physical and the spiritual. In the physical - we can hear sounds with our ears, if we are blessed with this privilege. However, in order to effectively hear things in the spiritual world we also live in, we must be aware of what’s taking place in the spiritual world (which is through our hearts & minds). God is a Spiritual Being and we communicate with Him spiritually.
When we develop a relationship with God and spend time with Him, we begin to know just how much He loves us! This is also where we draw strength, courage, and enlightenment, and we are guided by God on how to live this life.
So again, how in the world are we supposed to “love” our enemies? Well, it is impossible to love our enemies on our own - in this physical world that is. We can ONLY love enemies, do good to haters, and bless those who curse us through spiritual insight given by God. And we can only get this insight if we are in-tune and listening. Finally, if you are struggling with hate in your heart, I pray that God will send situations and circumstances to help you relieve that, because that is way too heavy to carry in your heart my friend.
God gives His love freely - YES completely free! It doesn't cost us anything to receive it. I encourage you to open your heart and receive the one and only love that never fails.
